This got me thinking about PRO cyclists and thier styles. Most are just like the rest of us, a simple trim of the mane every 6 weeks or so. But World Champions must really be drinking the Kool-Aid when at the barber
Lars Boom, 2007 U23 World Champion from Holland. That cut must be good for the days in Holland and Belgium when the wind and rain are coming down sideways. It also keeps the mud off your neck when you dont have the euro hat on backwards.
His ride that day in Spain, coming back from about 40th place to fly across the line was great to watch.
Having that flap in the back did not slow him down at all though. He also gone with the faux hawk at times also. That seems to be all the rage in Europe. Why go faux, when you can go all the way?
Viatcheslav Ekimov, the guy is older than Moses. He won a gold medal at the 1988 summer Olympics and then raced with Panasonic, US Postal, Amica Chips and Disco. His hair style never changed. That is the same cut that I saw on tv last week in an episode of Cops. Maybe he lives in a trailer park back in Russia?
Gert Jan Theunisse, rode primarily for the PDM team in the mid 80's. They might have been the first powerhouse team at the Tour. They had Steven Rooks, Pedro Delgado and Sean Kelly. Gert was also the biggest doper around, but that was before drug tests, so who wasn't? He won polka dot jersey in the 89 Tour. PDM won the team competition also. This is a pic of him today....
Last but not least.....the King of all Cycling Mullets has to be:
Laurent Brochard. The great French hope. World champ in 1997 while at Festina. The guy always rode for French teams: Castorama, Festina, Jean Delatour, AG2R Prévoyance, Bouygues Télécom. His hair style never changed
Honorable mention for other cycling hair styles:
Eric Vanderaerden, Mario Cipollini, Neil Stephens, Frank Vandenbrouke, Gerhard Trampusch and Fillipo Pozatto
A great post! A high percentage of World Champs featured. Curious huh? - RF
