When I was a kid growing up on the ranch in SE Colorado, we called them road tacks.
The latin name Tribulus means Coltrop. Yeah.... this Coltrop

Which lead to tires looking like this....
The Wiki pages yields the following insight:
A week after each flower blooms, it is followed by a fruit that easily falls apart into four or five single-seeded nutlets.
Yup... that's right.... I got my ass kicked by a plants nutlets.
